  Prologue

Three and a Half Years Prior, Underground Lab, Earth

“Are you listening to me, Dr. Turner?”

Megan Turner finally looked up away from the microscope and rubbed her weary eyes. The haggard face of the man standing next to her came into focus.

“I’m sorry? What were you saying?” She’d been up all night trying to figure out the latest development in the changes occurring in their female population.

“The council has decided that you won’t be accompanying the first group of pioneers going to planet Alpha.”

Megan stared at Arnold Leiderman not quite grasping what he was saying. Of course she would be going with them. Who would handle their medical needs? They had to have a physician to take care of them.

“What are you talking about? They can’t go to a strange planet we know next to nothing about without a physician. That’s ridiculous. They have to have medical assistance.”

The man sighed. “You haven’t heard a single thing I’ve said, have you?”

“I’m listening now. What is going on?” Megan crossed her arms and stared at the man.

“They have decided not to send any women with the first group. The men will settle the area and build homes before women will be introduced. If the men are busy working on setting up the new community, they won’t have time to watch out for the women. They will feel divided in trying to keep them safe and provide for them. This way, they will work twice as hard to get everything ready for their new wives.” Arnold smiled, an expression of satisfaction filling his face.

“That does make sense, but they still need a physician to take care of them. Accidents are bound to happen. Not to mention the dangers of an unknown planet.”

“They are going to have a male physician and male nurse go with them. Then, once things are settled, you will be sent to help with keeping things going. Your expertise in extraterrestrial biology and physiology will be of greatest need by that time. In the meantime, you are needed here to help us keep the females sequestered, in maximum reproductive health.”

Megan thought about it and silently agreed. While she was eager to travel to the new planet to study its effect on humans, she understood the need for her to remain here as long as possible to monitor and treat the remaining women still able to reproduce. The numbers were far fewer than the greater population knew. Many of the women living below ground in the bunkers designed to keep them safe from contracting Shear’s Disease from the dying sun’s increasing radiation weren’t actually still fertile.

Shear’s Disease occurred in women between the ages of eight and forty-five. It took away the woman’s ability to conceive. They had discovered that t
he increasing flares and explosions from the sun as it sputtered through its throes of death was directly linked to the female’s inability to become pregnant. There was no way to avoid it other than to hide the women below ground in specially made bunkers designed to withstand the constantly increasing radiation and magnetic fields produced by the sun.

Still, even with those precautions, few women were still able to conceive. The numbers were dwindling fast. She’d been frantically trying to pin down the reason they were still losing ground while trying to decipher some of the strange phenomena from the three new planets they’d chosen to send pioneers to settle. Even though they had teams of scientists working on all of the same issues, she was a physician and had a personal stake in the situation. She was scheduled to be one of the women going to one of the planets. Now they were telling her she wasn’t going to be with the first wave heading out.

“That does make sense. When will I be leaving?” she asked.

“I don’t know. The council only told me what I’ve told you. I suppose it will be with the first group of women to travel to the planets.” Arnold shrugged and turned away.

Megan sighed. With this job done, he had no reason to stick around. She briefly wondered where she would end up and when before turning back to her work. Time was running out and the future of the human race was at stake. It wasn’t as if the entire weight fell on her shoulders, but Megan felt her part of it intimately.

  Chapter One

Present Day, Planet Alpha, Space Station One

“Hurry up, Scott. I don’t want to leave her waiting at the transport pad.” Dr. Jeff Davis stood waiting with his hands on his hips as his partner and nurse, Scott Tibbs, jerked a shirt on and buttoned it.

“I had to have a shower after getting blood all over me. Not my fault Ted got his hand cut and needed stitches.” Scott quickly tucked his shirt into his jeans then adjusted his belt.

Jeff sighed and tried to tamp down his impatience. It had been over three years since they’d arrived on planet Alpha. Three long, hard years without a wife. Their wife was coming with every future shuttle, they’d been told, only it hadn’t happened until this time. First it had been decided to send the men ahead to build a place for the future families. Then it had been that they needed her to finish up the work she was doing to keep their females fertile until they could get them all off planet. Now, finally, they would meet their future wife for the first time.

“I’m almost afraid to believe she’s truly here,” Scott mumbled as he followed Jeff through the door. “I mean for a while I was beginning to wonder if they even had a wife for us.”

“Yeah, I was beginning to think the same thing. More than likely the only reason we are getting her now is because of the problems we’re faced with now that our women are having children. This strange cell that mutates in our blood stream and the changes in the pregnancies and infants is worrying everyone.”

“I wonder what she looks like. You would think they would have at least sent us a picture of her over the years.” Scott climbed into the buggy transport and strapped in.

“Well, we’re about to find out. At least we know she’s fertile or they wouldn’t have sent her. That makes her under thirty by their standards.”

“Unless those standards have changed,” Scott pointed out.

Jeff didn’t blame Scott for his pessimistic attitude. They’d been jerked around from day one. The council on Earth had been lying to everyone about a lot of things all along. He supposed a lot of it had been to prevent general panic at first, but over the last few years, Jeff had decided that they also lied to further their own agenda. Who knew what that agenda consisted of?

They pulled up outside the transport bay where they were to meet their wife-to-be. Both men unbuckled and jumped down as soon as Jeff had the transport safely shut off. There were several women still waiting on their husbands and all eyes turned to them when they emerged from the buggy. Jeff felt a moment of panic as dozens of eyes appraised him, most of them soon looked away once they realized that Scott and Jeff weren’t who they were waiting for.

He zeroed in on a young woman of about twenty-four or so who continued to study them much as he did when he peered through a microscope. This had to be their elusive wife. She stood around five foot four inches with a nicely curved body and oval face. Her features appeared strong, yet very feminine with her plump pink lips and pert nose. He wasn’t sure how long her hair was since she had it pulled back in a bun, but the color reminded him of rich, black satin sheets, thick and luxurious. He couldn’t wait to test his theory on that.

A pretty yellow dress that accented her lush hips and curvy waist dipped just low enough to afford them a glimpse of tantalizing cleavage. With her dark hair and a pair of mesmerizing blue eyes, their future wife looked feminine and maybe even a little dainty.

Evidently, Scott had settled on the same woman as his since he stepped toward her at the same time he did. They stopped in front of her and Jeff held out his hand.

“I’m Jeff Davis. Megan Turner, I presume?”

When she shook his hand, Jeff was pleased that she had a firm handshake, but didn’t try to mimic a male’s tendency to squeeze.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you, Dr. Davis. I can’t wait to see what you’ve uncovered here.” Though warmth showed in her beautiful blue eyes, her voice sounded all business.

“I’m Scott Tibbs. I don’t think there’s any need to be formal. After all, we’re engaged and will be married in a few minutes.”

Her audible gasp wasn’t lost on Jeff. Evidently she hadn’t planned on sealing their fates so quickly. Maybe they were asking too much of her…no. After the first set of women had arrived on the planet, it had been determined that letting them all make a choice didn’t work as they had planned, so the council had changed the process to have a computer match potential mates and they were married on Earth prior to leaving for Alpha. They hadn’t had any “get to know each other time,” so Jeff didn’t see why they needed to wait either. Maybe it was having been alone without female companionship for three years that was making him impatient and want to rush everything along, but three years of using nothing but his hand to relieve the pressure that built in his cock almost daily had gotten old over two years ago.

“I—I guess I thought we would get to know each other first,” she finally spoke up, her voice sultry despite the slight waver in it.

“We tend to not waste time around here,” Jeff said.

“Nothing will change no matter how long we take to get to know each other,” Scott added.

Megan’s face turned a light shade of pink at Scott’s comment. Jeff found he liked seeing her a little off center. He had little doubt, knowing what he knew about a lot of female physicians and scientists that they tended to be very uptight and stuck on protocol and procedures. They didn’t live that way on Alpha. They couldn’t afford to. Life on their new planet had proven to be dangerous at times.

“Um, okay.” She looked around her with an expression of uncertainty.

“Is this all of your luggage, Megan?” Jeff figured he better get them moving or they might end up having to chase down a fleeing fiancée.

“Oh, yes.” She reached down and picked up a suitcase in each hand. “Except for the two containers of supplies to be delivered to the office later.”

Jeff pulled the two suitcases from her hands. “We’ll handle the luggage. No need for you to wear yourself out carting it around.”

Scott took one of the suitcases from him and they both took a handle on either end of a trunk to load into the buggy. He was surprised that she had only brought the one trunk and two suitcases. Most of the other women arrived with much more in tow. Despite her girly dress and low-heeled pumps, Jeff had to conclude that she hadn’t planned to need a great deal to live there. Perhaps she thought they would be spending most of their time working. Shaking his head, he exchanged questioning glances with Scott as they loaded up the buggy.

  “Let me hel
p you up, Megan,” Scott said once they’d closed the back down. “Never get in or out of a transport buggy when it’s actually on.”

“They warned us about that in one of our classes.” She gave them a soft smile before allowing Scott to help her up into the front.

Jeff walked around and climbed in the driver’s side to strap in. He watched as Scott showed her how to strap in with the harness. It was no surprise to him that his dick hardened at the sight of Scott running his hands lightly over their soon to be wife as he checked the harness to be sure it was secure but not too tight. He caught himself clenching his hands on the controls and forced them to relax.

“Ready?” he finally asked without looking at her again.

  “I’m ready,” she said.

Jeff wasn’t quite as sure that she was ready for their future together or the challenges their new home planet would throw their way. He hazarded a guess that even Dr. Megan Turner hadn’t been privy to all there was to know about Alpha and its evolving secrets.

  Chapter Two

As they walked out of the city hall, the main gathering place for city meetings, Megan tried to acclimate herself to the fact that not only was she on a new planet, but was also now a married woman—a married woman with not one husband, but two. Despite having had years to become used to the practice and what to expect, she hadn’t actually thought about what all it would mean to be one of the women living on one of the three planets they’d chosen for settlements.
